“Ultimo Tango a Parigi”, film del 1972 diretto da Bernardo Bertolucci, racconta la conoscenza, la frequentazione, le interazioni tra due perfetti sconosciuti che si incontrano casualmente nella capitale francese, una giovanissima Maria Schneider, in un ruolo che la rese famosissima e che segnò il resto della sua carriera, e il ben più maturo Marlon Brando, già attore di fama mondiale all’epoca. Ne uscì uno dei drammi erotici più famosi di sempre, oggetto di infinite censure e controversie; si dice che sia il destino delle grandi opere d’arte, e non è forse un caso che “Ultimo Tango” sia molto discusso ancora oggi.
Per la realizzazione della colonna sonora del film fu scelto un sassofonista di origini argentine, Gato Barbieri, che già negli anni ‘60 era solito frequentare la scena jazz romana. Quando si trattò di comporre la musica di “Ultimo Tango” Barbieri era già un musicista affermato, ma richiamò a sé alcuni dei musicisti con cui aveva suonato in precedenza a Roma, costituendo un ‘ensemble allargato’ di ben nove elementi, accompagnato da un’orchestra sinfonica i cui arrangiamenti furono curati da un altro gigante del jazz, Oliver Nelson.
Quello tra la musica di Barbieri e le visioni di Bertolucci fu uno dei molti matrimoni perfetti passati alla storia del cinema e delle colonne sonore. Tra i solchi di questa soundtrack memorabile si mescolano tre elementi principali: le immancabili melodie del tango, la malinconia degli archi dell’orchestra e la tensione erotica generata dal sassofono di Gato Barbieri, uno stile unico capace di unire potenza ed espressività come pochi altri al mondo.

5.Last Tango In Paris“Last Tango in Paris” is a 1972 film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci that tells the encounter and the interactions between two perfect strangers who meet by chance in the French capital: a very young Maria Schneider, in a role that made her very famous and that left an indelible mark upon the rest of her career, and the much more mature Marlon Brando, already a world-famous actor at the time. The result was one of the most famous erotic and dramatic films ever, subject of endless censorship and controversy; great works of art are used to that, one might say, and maybe it’s not a coincidence that “Last Tango” is still discussed a lot today.
The realization of the film’s soundtrack was assigned to Gato Barbieri, a saxophonist born in Argentine who used to frequent the Roman jazz scene already in the ’60s. When it came to composing the music of “Last Tango”, Barbieri was already an established musician, but he called back some of the musicians with whom he had previously played in Rome, creating a 9-element enlarged ensemble; arrangements for the accompanying symphony orchestra had been made by another jazz giant, Oliver Nelson.
The union between Barbieri’s music and Bertolucci’s visions was one of the many perfect marriages that made history in the cinema and soundtrack fields. Three main ingredients are blended among the grooves of this memorable score: the tango melodies – of course, the melancholy of the orchestra string instruments and the erotic tension generated by Gato Barbieri’s saxophone, thanks to his unique style that could combine energy and feeling like few others in the world.
