“L’Ultimo Treno della Notte” è un film thriller del 1975 diretto da Aldo Lado, una pellicola tra le più violente mai prodotte in Italia negli anni ’70 (e non solo) che in realtà mostra, anche nelle scene più crude, per stessa ammissione del regista, un duro attacco alla società borghese e ai detentori del potere.
Nonostante il budget limitato, l’amicizia che legava il regista al compositore Ennio Morricone rese possibile anche questa collaborazione, i cui frutti furono però quasi completamente ‘oscurati’ all’epoca in quanto fu solamente pubblicato un 45 giri con i brani “Coincidenze” e una versione ‘medley’ de “L’ultimo treno della notte” con lo sferragliare del treno sui binari in sottofondo, mentre la canzone “A Flower’s All You Need” cantata da Demis Roussos degli Aphrodite’s Child fu stampata su un raro 7” giapponese. Queste tracce sono tutte presenti in questa edizione esclusiva della colonna sonora realizzata da Morricone, insieme alle altre numerose versioni del tema principale del film, caratterizzato da una parte centrale carica di tensione, ritmata e con echi del leggendario tema di “Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto”. Le note di “Coincidenze” sono altrettanto degne dei migliori polizieschi all’italiana, mentre il tema “Solitudine” aggiunge sensazioni di tristezza e malinconia. L’armonica di Franco De Gemini ci ricorda inoltre che film di questo genere sono praticamente dei western ambientati in epoche e contesti moderni.

Despite the limited budget, the friendship between Aldo Lado and composer Ennio Morricone made this collaboration possible; nonetheless, only a 45rpm 7″ was released at the time, containing the songs “Coincidenze” and a ‘medley’ version of the theme track with the train wheels rattling on the tracks in the background, while the song “A Flower’s All You Need”, sung by Demis Roussos of Aphrodite’s Child, was included in a rare Japanese single. All these tracks can be found in this exclusive edition of Morricone’s soundtrack, together with the various other versions of the film’s main theme, characterized by a middle section filled with tension, pronounced rhythmic patterns and echoes of the legendary theme of “Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion”. The notes of “Coincidenze” are just as worthy of the best Italian police movies, while the “Solitudine” theme adds sadness and melancholy notes to the mix. Franco De Gemini’s harmonica also reminds us that this kind of films are nothing else than westerns set in modern times and contexts.
