LA MASCHERA DI CERA – La Maschera di Cera

Between the end of the ‘90s and the beginning of the 21st Century there has been a real Italian progressive rock renaissance, with many new bands dedicated to a sound that was believed to be irretrievably lost in the folds of time. One of the biggest names of this new beginning was La Maschera di Cera, a band that gathered members of the already well-known Finisterre (Fabio Zuffanti, Agostino Macor, Marco Cavani) with the expressive voice of Alessandro Corvaglia, former collaborator of Zuffanti in the project “Merlin – The Rock Opera”, and Andrea Monetti’s flute (Alhambra, Ku, Embryo).

La Maschera di Cera’s eponymous debut, dated 2002, obtained great and unanimous acclaim at the time of its release, and was hailed as the best Italian prog album since the legendary Alphataurus debut: four long songs in a perfect prog tradition, with a long stand-out title-track that would occupy an entire hypothetical first side of a vinyl record. Acoustic guitars and a constant vintage keyboard soundscape dominate the scene, but there is no shortage of hard-prog moments and long instrumental sections, still highly exciting and engaging today.

An excellent album reissued by AMS Records, the first step in a discography that has obtained international acclaim from critics and audiences, immediately positioning La Maschera di Cera among the main names of a new era of Italian progressive rock!
