Il nome dei Goblin è noto a molti sin dai tempi di “Profondo Rosso” (1975), ma anche per coloro che li conoscono in maniera approfondita “Notturno” resta un capitolo quasi del tutto ignoto all’interno della fitta discografia della band romana. Le musiche furono realizzate appositamente per una produzione omonima, edita in due versioni, una cinematografica uscita nelle sale nel 1983 e una televisiva trasmessa in sette episodi solo tre anni dopo.
Capitanati all’epoca da Fabio Pignatelli (basso), Maurizio Guarini (Tastiere) e Antonio Marangolo (sassofono), con il prezioso apporto di Derek Wilson (batteria) e Marco Rinalduzzi (chitarra), provenienti dalla formazione che poco prima aveva registrato “Volo”, su richiesta della RAI i Goblin composero e registrarono la musica di “Notturno” già sul finire del 1981; il materiale fu poi selezionato dalla Cinevox, che solo nell’83 pubblicò la colonna sonora del film su LP: dato lo scarso successo della pellicola, anche l’album passò praticamente inosservato.
E fu un vero peccato, dato che in questa occasione i Goblin tornarono a cimentarsi in un campo in cui hanno ben pochi rivali, quello delle musiche da film, realizzando un lavoro teso e malinconico al tempo stesso, che concilia jazz-rock e fusion con le sonorità dei primi anni ’80, lasciando però che la tensione – si tratta sempre di un film di spionaggio – sia appannaggio esclusivo della componente rock. L’anima dei Goblin è tutta racchiusa nella bellissima “Nocturne” posta in apertura, tra echi di ‘007’, richiami a “Zombi”, energici riff di chitarra e sintetizzatori che dialogano con le tastiere.
Ristampato in un paio di occasioni in CD, “Notturno” non è mai stato ripubblicato in vinile prima d’ora. Questa edizione targata AMS Records, realizzata appositamente per il Record Store Day 2017, amplia la tracklist originale con l’aggiunta di take inedite e un nuovo artwork e un poster allegato con testi a corredo e riproduzioni di materiale raro e promozionale del film. Anche se non eccellente dal punto di vista cinematografico, sotto l’aspetto musicale “Notturno” è l’ennesimo gioiello partorito da artisti che la musica da film l’avevano nel sangue!

Led at the time by Fabio Pignatelli (bass), Maurizio Guarini (keyboards) and Antonio Marangolo (saxophone), with the precious contribution of Derek Wilson (drums) and Marco Rinalduzzi (guitar) – from the line-up that had just recorded “Volo” – Goblin composed the music for “Notturno” already at the end of 1981, upon request by the RAI TV producers. The recorded material was then selected by Cinevox, that only in ’83 published the film’s soundtrack on LP: given the poor success of the film, also the soundtrack album went virtually unnoticed.
It was a pity, because Goblin here returned to work in a field where they almost have no competitors, that of music for films, creating a work that is tense and melancholic at the same time, combining jazz-rock and fusion with the sounds of the early ’80s; tension, however – which can’t be missed in a spy movie – is always delivered by the soundtrack rock component. The essence of Goblin’s music is completely enclosed in the beautiful “Nocturne”, an opening track that swings among echoes of ‘007’, references to the “Zombi / Dawn of the Dead” OST, energetic guitar riffs and synthesizers that dialogue with the keyboards.
Re-released on CD a couple times, “Notturno” has never been reissued on vinyl before. This AMS Records edition, exclusively made for the Record Store Day 2017, expands the original tracklist with the addition of unreleased takes and with a completely different artwork and a poster that includes a presentation text and reproductions of rare material related to the movie. Although not excellent from the sole cinematographic point of view, musically “Notturno” is yet another jewel made by artists that had film music rushing in their blood!
