In an age when it’s practically impossibile to come out with something really original in the artistic/musical field, Il Babau & I Maledetti Cretini – even taking an unconventional monicker, an homage to Dino Buzzati’s painting “Il Babau” (1967) – have made “La Maschera della Morte Rossa” (The Masque of the Red Death), a ‘phono-tragedy’ taken from Edgar Allan Poe’s eponymous short story.

Mostly instrumental, this work draws on many different styles – folk, progressive rock, theatrical avant-garde, sacred music, psychedelia, etc. – and is not to be confused with nowadays reading trend. The goal is to recreate the lurid and apocalyptic atmosphere of Poe’s story, and to capture the viewer's attention from the first note until the tragic end.

First act of a trilogy dedicated to the “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” series, the phono-drama is completed and enriched by a 48-page booklet, with the original novel text and great illustrations made by Siro Garrone.
